The DTF Artwork Prep Guide: DPI, Color & Upload Checklist
Clean edges, vivid color, and consistent results start with solid file prep. Use this guide to set up artwork for Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing and avoid common pitfalls.
Recommended File Types
- Preferred: PNG, PDF, AI, SVG
- Transparency: Use a transparent background to avoid unwanted boxes.
- Text: Outline/convert to curves when possible; embed fonts if needed.
DPI & Sizing
- 300 DPI at final size is the safest rule of thumb.
- Avoid scaling up low-res images; design at the actual print size.
- Very thin strokes may vanish when pressed; keep strokes ≥ 0.5–0.75 pt.
Color Settings & Appearance
- RGB files are accepted; minor shifts can occur between monitors and print.
- Rich blacks: Ensure adequate color density; avoid very light grays for critical elements.
- White underbase: Needed for opacity on dark garments—clean up edges to prevent halos.

- Transparent background (or intended background color set)

FAQ
Raster or vector—what’s better?
Both work. Use vector for logos/line art; use high-res raster (300 DPI at final size) for photos.
Why do colors look slightly different in print?
Displays vary, and print uses different inks/substrates. Calibrated workflows reduce variance, but small shifts are normal.
