A transfer can look perfect when it leaves the press, then start lifting at a letter edge, a fine detail, or a whole corner after one wash. Why Is My Transfer Peeling After Pressing?

The transfer can appear attached at first, but weak areas will reveal themselves when the garment cools, stretches, or goes through the wash.
Start by checking the basics. Your transfer supplier's pressing instructions should always lead, since film and adhesive formulas can vary. A common DTF starting point is around 300-320°F for 10-15 seconds with firm, even pressure, followed by the recommended hot, warm, or cold peel. But the exact numbers are not a substitute for a reliable press.
An infrared thermometer and a pressure test are two small tools that can save a lot of reprints. The display on a heat press can say 315°F while the platen surface is running significantly cooler in spots. Likewise, a pressure knob setting does not guarantee that pressure reaches every area of a thick seam, zipper, pocket, or uneven garment.
Your press is not hot enough
Low temperature is one of the biggest reasons a transfer peels. The adhesive powder needs sufficient heat to melt into the garment fibers. If the platen is cooler than its display suggests, the film may release cleanly while the design is only lightly sitting on the fabric.
Check the platen in several places, especially the corners. If you find a temperature gap, increase the setting only after confirming the actual surface temperature. Do not guess your way to a hotter press. Too much heat can scorch delicate fabrics, distort polyester, or leave unwanted press marks.
Pressure is too light or uneven
DTF needs real contact between the transfer adhesive and the garment. Light pressure can leave small sections unbonded, especially around the edges of large artwork. Those sections are the first to lift.
Set pressure with the garment and transfer in place, not on an empty lower platen. If you are pressing over seams, collars, buttons, drawstrings, pockets, or heavy fleece, use a pressing pillow or adjust the garment so the print area sits flat. A level press surface matters more than trying to crank the pressure setting as high as it will go.
The press time was too short
Speed is great until it costs you a remake. A few seconds short can prevent the adhesive from fully activating, especially on heavier cotton, hoodies, canvas, or textured blends.
If you are trying to increase production speed, validate the shorter press time with wash tests first. Press several samples, wait 24 hours, and wash them according to the garment's care instructions. A reliable process beats a fast-looking process every time.
Peeling at the Film Stage? Check Your Peel Method
Not every DTF transfer peels the same way. Some are hot peel, meaning you remove the carrier film immediately or within seconds. Others need a warm or cold peel. Pulling film at the wrong stage can lift ink and adhesive right off the garment.
For a hot-peel transfer, peel in one smooth, confident motion while the transfer is still hot. Do not stop repeatedly or yank straight upward. Peel low and back across the garment, almost parallel to the surface. That motion helps the design stay planted while the carrier film releases.
If any part of the design starts lifting with the film, stop. Lay the film back down exactly where it was, press again for a few seconds, and try the peel once more. Do not keep pulling and hope it improves. That turns one loose corner into a full reprint.
After peeling, complete the final press. Cover the design with parchment paper, a finishing sheet, or another recommended cover sheet and press again for 5-10 seconds. This post-press step improves adhesion and gives the print a cleaner, more finished feel. Skipping it is a common shortcut that shows up later in the wash.
The Garment May Be the Real Problem
A great transfer cannot overcome every fabric issue. Garment composition, coatings, moisture, and texture all affect adhesion.
Cotton and cotton blends are generally straightforward. Polyester, performance wear, nylon, and treated garments require more attention. Some polyester garments can show dye migration under heat, while water-resistant or stain-resistant finishes can prevent adhesive from bonding well. Ribbed fabric, canvas, and heavily textured garments may need additional pressure or a test press because the adhesive must reach into an uneven surface.
Moisture can also interfere. A garment that has been stored in a humid space or contains residual moisture may not accept the transfer consistently. Pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds to flatten fibers and remove moisture, then let it settle briefly before placing the transfer.
Be especially cautious with garments labeled as water-repellent, waterproof, silicone-washed, or heavily treated. Test a small area before committing to a full production run. The trade-off is simple: specialty fabrics can make a product look premium, but they demand more process control.
Peeling After Washing? Look at Care and Cure Time
When a transfer survives the press but peels after washing, the first question is whether it was fully bonded during application. The second is whether the garment was cared for correctly.
Give freshly pressed garments at least 24 hours before the first wash when possible. Then wash inside out in cold or warm water, use a mild detergent, and avoid bleach or fabric softener. Tumble dry low or hang dry. High dryer heat is rough on both the garment and the print over time.
A customer will not always follow every instruction, so your pressing process needs enough margin to handle normal wear. That is why the final press and wash testing matter. If one sample starts peeling after a standard wash, do not send the rest of the run out until you identify the cause.
A Fast Fix for a Lifting Transfer
If only a small edge is lifting and the garment is still clean, you may be able to save it. Place the lifted section back into position, cover it with parchment or a finishing sheet, and repress using the correct temperature, pressure, and time for that transfer and fabric. Allow it to cool or peel according to the transfer's instructions, then complete the post-press.
This fix works best when the design has not collected lint, skin oils, detergent residue, or damage from washing. Once adhesive is contaminated or the artwork has stretched and cracked, a reprint is usually the professional answer.
